Literature Text

Today, under the lovely summer sun, Lovino found himself hanging around at the Trevi Fountain in Rome. The fountain was always bustling with a mixture of people, all eager to toss a coin into the water and make their wish. Lovino had seen countless numbers of people stand with their back to the fountain, clutching the coin in their right fist as they made their wish, and then toss the coin over their left shoulder.
Scanning the crowd, Lovino could see many women wandering about. Most were travelling in small groups of three or more, others were strolling hand in hand with their lover. He noticed a small group gathered near the front of the fountain, chattering like early morning birds – probably deciding what to wish for.
After straightening his posture and putting on a kind expression, Lovino sauntered over to the ladies. Halfway towards them, with the most unfortunate luck, he bumped into a passing stranger.
“Hey, what’s the big idea?!” he growled, stumbling back. “Watch where you’re going, dammit!”
The person he bumped into turned to face him, revealing a pretty face drenched in tears. “S-Sorry,” the woman mumbled, quickly wiping her damp eyes with the back of her hand. “Excuse me.”
Upon realising it was a woman he crashed into, Lovino immediately felt guilty and took hold of her hand before she could scurry away. “Apetta un minuto! Hold on!” The woman looked back at Lovino, clearly startled with being grabbed. Lovino loosened his grip and asked, “Are you alright, bella? Seeing tears in such pretty [e/c] eyes, it almost makes me want to cry as well.”
The woman, too startled to speak, lowered her head and let her hair fall over her face. “You don’t need to be so kind to me, signore,” she muttered.
Lovino released her hand and crossed his arms. He analysed the woman from head to toe. “Would you like to join me for gelato?” he finally asked, jabbing his thumb over his shoulder. “There’s a nice shop over there where we can eat together. What do you say, bella?”
Timidly, the woman looked up at Lovino, taken aback by his kind smile. “I couldn’t,” she answered. “I don’t want to waste your time.”
“I insist,” he urged. “Besides, eating gelato with such a pretty girl sounds like fun.”
In the end, the woman ended up joining Lovino in a cute shop, called Bar Fontana Di Trevi. After ordering a bowl of the delicious Italian ice cream, Lovino showed the woman up to the balcony, where the two had a lovely view of the Trevi Fountain.
“It’s quite pretty,” the woman complimented, as she sat down at one of the small tables.
“Almost as pretty as you,” Lovino added. Once comfortable across from the woman, he took a spoonful of gelato and hovered it in front of his mouth before asking, “What is your name, bella?”
“[Name],” she answered, her face still a bit red from the previous compliment. “And you?”
“Lovino.” He tilted his head a bit to the side. “Why were you crying, [Name]? Seeing such an expression on a girl’s face makes me sad.”
[Name] quietly ate her gelato, hesitant to meet with Lovino’s curious eyes. “Well, you see…” she chanced a glance at Lovino. “I was on a date with someone I really liked, and I thought he really liked me, but…”
A breakup story, eh? Lovino had heard his fair share of sob stories from girls over recent breakups – he wasn’t that good when it came to comforting them, but he could certainly draw their mind off of the topic for a bit. He took another bite of his gelato, waiting for [Name] to spill her story of heartbreak and sadness.
“… I’m not sure if I should tell you, signore- er, Lovino.” She feigned a small smile. “You might think low of me, too, if I tell you.”
Lovino shook his head. “Never,” he stated. “I do not know you personally, [Name], but I can tell you are a wonderful woman. So, you can tell me anything.”
[Name] lowered her spoon and let out a nervous breath of air. “We were walking down the street, him and I, and he said that he loved me. I was more than happy, but my happiness disappeared when I realised I was keeping something from him. I guess you could call it my ‘big secret.’” She lightly chuckled, but it wasn’t hard to see how nervous she was. “You see, back when I was a kid, I was a boy.”
At first, Lovino wanted to laugh and call [Name] a funny girl, but after seeing the amount of seriousness and nervousness mixed together on her face, he knew laughing was the last thing he should do.
“You were a guy?” he asked, trying hard to keep his expression calm. “Like, a man? With all the parts and stuff?”
  She nodded.
Lovino was silent for a moment longer before clearing his throat. “I see. Um, and I’m guessing this guy you were dating didn’t take it very well?”
She nodded again. “When I told him, he looked at me as if I had two heads… which I don’t, anymore.” She laughed at her joke, but Lovino was still too busy dealing with the shock. [Name] lowered her gaze to the bowl of gelato, letting out another sigh. “I shouldn’t be fazed by this kind of thing. I’ve dealt with it for years. But I guess after meeting him and being treated so nicely, I forgot all the pain I ever faced and just… lived in the moment.”
Unsure of how to respond right away, Lovino simply ate his gelato, letting [Name] speak as much as she wanted. She must feel somewhat comfortable now, since she’s talking and somewhat smiling more than when he first met her by the fountain. Yes, she used to be a guy, but… so what? She’s a girl now, and a pretty one at that.
“[Name],” Lovino began, “you don’t need jerks like that. If someone won’t accept you for who you are, then kick their ass and send them home, dammit. You’re a bella ragazza.”
Silence fell over their table, with only the sound of people down below. To Lovino’s surprise and worry, [Name] lowered her head and tears suddenly began to pour down her face. Afraid he said something to upset her, he reached across the table and took her hand in his.
“Did I say something wrong?” he asked, examining her with worried eyes.
[Name] looked up, further surprising Lovino with the bright smile across her face. “No, not at all,” she assured, sniffling before letting out a laugh. “It’s just that… you have a wonderful way with words, Lovino.”
A shimmer of happiness could be seen in her [e/c] eyes, and it was enough to make even Lovino crack a smile.
“Hey, fratello!” A familiar voice called out to Lovino, urging him to look down into the crowd. When he did, he spotted someone waving frantically at him. His little brother, Feliciano.
“Shit,” he grumbled. “My stupid fratello found me.”
[Name] looked down below at the giddy Italian before giggling. “He seems friendly,” she commented, amused by his eccentric behaviour.
Lovino stood up from the table. “Yeah, yeah, a little too friendly, dammit.” He gestured to the door leading inside. “Want to come with me and meet him?”
  [Name] smiled and nodded. “Sure.”

Outside by the fountain, Lovino was greeted by Feliciano with a friendly hug.
“Get off me, you idiot!” he snapped, shoving him away. “What do you want, bastard?” Lovino crossed his arms, glaring at his brother with unkind eyes.
Instead of speaking directly to Lovino, Feliciano instantly took interest in [Name]. “Ciao, who are you? I am Feliciano Vargas, Lovino’s little brother. You are very pretty, are you his girlfriend?”
An embarrassed blush crossed [Name]’s face and she quickly shook her head. “No, I’m not. We were just chatting, enjoying gelato together.”
Feliciano’s face lit up at the mention of the tasty Italian treat. “I want gelato, too!”
“You’ll just end up eating too much and get a stomach ache afterwards, dammit!” said Lovino. “Go and have lunch somewhere, so you won’t get sick off of ice cream.”
Feliciano beamed at his big brother. “You’re so thoughtful, fratello! I will, and then I’ll eat gelato!” He turned back to [Name]. “Since you aren’t going out with Lovi, would you like to join me? We can eat lunch together at a nice restaurant down the street.”
[Name] smiled kindly at Feliciano’s request. “I’m sorry,” she apologised, “but, I think I want to walk around with Lovino for a bit, if that’s okay with him.”
Hearing her request, Lovino’s eyes drifted upwards and he subconsciously scratched the back of his head. “It’s fine with me,” he answered.
“Ve…” Feliciano looked from one to the other before smiling innocently. “Okay. Ciao!” He gave a friendly salute to Lovino and [Name] before skipping away, humming a happy tune to himself as he disappeared into the crowd.
“I like your brother,” [Name] said to Lovino. “He seems really nice.”
Lovino rolled his eyes. “Yeah, yeah, everyone loves the little idiota.” He glanced around the fountain before laying his eyes back on [Name]. “So, you said you wanted to walk around, right? Where should we walk?”
[Name] hummed in thought, tapping her pointer finger on her chin. “I don’t know,” she finally said. “Let’s just… walk.”

Lovino didn’t expect to find himself strolling down the street with a woman that was once a man. He thought such a thing would be unlikely prior to meeting [Name]. What he also didn’t expect was for him to start liking this friendly transsexual after spending the day with her. But hey, what's life without a few surprises?
This is a contest entry for :iconthe-amazing-kay:'s Hetalia Reader Insert Contest :w00t:

I don't know much about the Italy (the country), or transsexuals, or anything like that. I only know what the internet tells me. That's not always a good resource, but it's all I've got, and it's been doing me good so far. Hopefully all of you with awesome knowledge on this stuff will be pleased, and if not, just tell me where my mistakes lay. :D

That title JUST fits, so hush and don't give me any crap about me not saying you're a transsexual. I was kind of aiming for it to be a surprise anyway. :giggle: But yeah, sorry if you're angry or something.
